Recognition of qualifications is key to secure mobility of students and researchers and is also an important factor to secure international cooperation in higher education. Instruments have been put in place both on the global, European and EU level to facilitate mobility of students, and all these initiatives have been gaining momentum in the last few years.
One important feature of development in global higher education is transnational education, which gives several possibilities and challenges. Key initiatives under UNESCO’s Global Recognition Convention and Lisbon Recognition Convention are establishing guidelines and best practices with regards to the various models of cross-border education delivery. From the European Commission’s side, the European Universities Initiative is one important scheme which falls into the definition of transnational education.
The Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) is part of the Norwegian Contact Office for Research, Innovation and Education in Brussels (NorCore). We are hosting a half-day event in the morning on the 9th February, where we discuss the relevant trends in recognition of qualifications, globally, in Europe and in the EU, including on opportunities and challenges regarding the fast-expanding provisions of transnational education. We believe there is a need to investigate these various initiatives, and to discuss how we through these initiatives can make sure that transnational education reaches its full potential in an increasingly complex world of higher education.
Confirmed speakers include the Chair of the UNESCO Global Convention for Recognition of Qualifications, representatives of both the European Commission and Council of Europe, and relevant global and European Higher Education stakeholders’ organisations. Full programme:
